Google Instant Censorship?

September 30, 2010 • 2:31 pm • Posted by Heather in Uncategorized

So Google’s new search algorithm, Instant, has a strong auto-filter type function to help remove or block certain words from searches. This is to help censor inappropriate results from minors. At some point I wonder how much censoring should be allowed. The usually liberal search engine is trying something new to keep offensive material off of their algorithm. How do you feel about having your searches somewhat censored? Here is the full article from Mashable.

Happy Birthday Mario and Luigi!

Today Super Mario Bros. celebrates their 25th year as fighting plumbers, defending the honor of Princess Peach against Bowser and his minions of Bullet Bill, Fly traps, fire balls and other bad guys.

I remember when I got my Nintendo system. It was for Christmas, I was 7 and it was 1990, for me, not 1985. My mom being a big kid at heart, played it before I opened it for Christmas, to, you know, make sure the system wasn’t defective or anything. Growing up through the years, I remember playing The Super Mario Bros. games on my step-brothers’ Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64. I outgrew video games in high school, trading them in for sports and dance teams at school, as well and having a more active social life, but I still love reminiscing about all of the fun times I had. If my step Dad didn’t throw out my original Nintendo game system, I’d probably still play a game every once in a while.

I LOVED playing the game SO much. I wasn’t very good at it, but it was my favorite out of all the video games I had. Now, 25 years after it originally came out, Nintendo is celebrating with a new game made for its newest game system, the Wii. I’m sure my mom will be “testing” Super Mario Galaxy 2 out on the Wii too! That’s right, she has a Wii and I don’t, but it’s okay. Watching her move all over the place while trying to stay alive and maneuver Mario through the levels will be entertainment enough for me!

Quality vs. Quantity in Search Results.

In reading The Huffington Post Monday, I came across this article about Google trying to stay in the social media running, err rather “Boost Social Media Offerings” against Facebook with the acquisition of Angstro. Angstro is a start up company focusing on analyzing “a wide breadth of information from multiple data sources to deliver very few, yet very intelligent results.”

Methinks this means Google will become more relevant again when it comes to specific information. I think this is pretty cool, as I search for VERY  specific items at times and get shafted with non-relevant results that I end up having to sift through or thinking up other random words that might possibly relate to the original term I throw out to Google. Obviously, when we Google something, we get a plethora of information, but with this new offering, results would make more sense to the Googler (Or would it be the googlee?).  This also should prove to boost ad sales for Search Engine Marketing. The post also shares Social Media ad spending estimates for the next couple of years, “Research firm eMarketer estimates that social network ad spending will hit $3.3 billion in 2010 and $4.26 billion in 2011.”

What do you think about all of this online, public? I am all eyes!
